What every single dress code really mean.

Nothing sucks the fun out of getting ready to an event quicker than some obscure dress code printed on the invitation card. So I did a little research on how to dress for each dress code.

1. Black tie.

It is a dress code that requires men to wear a dinner jacket with matching trousers a pleated white shirt, black formal shoes and a bow tie.

For women it translates as a long and evening appropriate fabric such as velvet, chiffon or lace.

2. Black tie optional.

For women this generally means a full length silhouette.

3. Creative black tie.

When a formal event calls for a creative black tie code, it means you do not have to adhere to the traditional black tie standards in which men are expected to wear a specific tuxedo shirt paired with black suit, and women are expected to wear evening dresses.

4. Cocktail.

Cocktail attire is a standard dress code for parties and evening functions. For women cocktail attire typically calls for a dress that finishes at or above the knee and high heels.

For men it means that you should wear a suit in dark colors, ideally navy or chocolate with white shirt, a pair of black leather dress shoes and tie.

5. Festive.

A combination of cocktail attire but often holiday flair.

6. Business casual.

Include slacks or khakis, dress shirt or blouse open collar or polo shirt, optional tie or seasonal sport coat, a dress or skirt at knee length or below and a tailored blazer.
