It is a cold Easter Holiday for Hotel owners especially for the ones at the coast since they normally depend on travellers from Nairobi but this is not happening.
This is because the cessation of movement of five major counties Nairobi , Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Nakuru that barres movement out of the areas. This measure was placed in place by the President as way to curb the surging numbers of COVID 19 cases in the country.
Hotel owners in the coast normally smiles during this time of Easter Holiday which normally coincides with closing of schools, hence recording high number of tourists almost 90- 100 % occupancy. This year hotels in the coast have recorded a low turnout of tourists averaging between 10 -20%.
Domestic travelers have been lifeline for the hotel business in the country since international travellers are hardly coming to the country due to the Covid 19 pandemic. The low turn out has put on threat on jobs with Kenya Tourism Federation warning of job losses. KTF chairman Mohammed Hersi revealed that with the new measures they have no alternative but to let some of their staff go.
